The term 86 comes from a famous speakeasy during the time of Prohibition. When the Cops (who were on the payroll of the bar) would call to warn people about the upcoming raid, the bartender would give the command "86 everybody!" That meant that everyone should hightail it out the 86 Bedford entrance because the cops were coming through another door. Over the years the term 86 came to mean to get rid of, to nix or to remove.
